1/29/2024 0 Comments 10 minutes until sunset dateline![]() Breakfast buffet is not expansive but features a live egg station, surprisingly good home made yoghurt, decent fresh papaya, watermelon, pineapple. ![]() The Tanoa seems much larger than most alternative hotels in town, and was recommended without hesitation as the best 4* property in Tonga by both fellow passengers on our inbound flight and by friendly people we met after arrivals. dinnertime, indeed the Tanoa seemed to be the only lively and lit up place in town, with most other hotels and restaurants looking very quiet/dark or even closed when we went looking in the rental car at around 730pm. Decent “poolside bar grill” food is served all day incl. Cruise ships dock just opposite, and kids jumping off a second jetty provide amusement at sunset - being city centre the water is not all that clean and there is certainly no beach. Guests who had been present in the hotel on Feb 12th commented the cyclone was ‘no big deal’ despite the shorefront location just along the same road from the Parliament building which lost its roof. Absolutely no evidence of damage post cyclone Gita 5 weeks prior (other than a toppled satellite dish in the back yard which may have been there already). when we pointed out there was a smell emanating from a housekeeping trolley outside our room, they promptly removed it). Reasonable value (280 Pa’anga/night =$124). Comfortable bed but not particularly wide. If we ever return to Nuku'alofa, we'll definitely stay at the International Dateline Hotel! More Show less From the hotel lobby, we saw it anchored at the dock and easily walked there in ten minutes. We had flown to Tonga to reconnect with our cruise ship, the Crystal Symphony. A family across the street had a lively patio party that continued until about 4 a.m. The only fly in the ointment had nothing to do with the hotel. To our delight, Rick appeared while we were eating and we enjoyed another visit with him. The staff was friendly and helpful, and the breakfast delicious. The beautiful room was comfortable and spotless and the hotel in general gleamed. We arrived late in the evening and were delighted to find Rick, the hotel's excursion manager, at the airport to pick us up. We only spent a few hours there overnight and chose it because the Tanoa Waterfront hotel in Lautoka, Fiji had been a good choice and we were in a hurry to find a place in Tonga. We never expected to find such a shiny, new, modern hotel in Nuku'alofa.
